Val Chmerkovskiy, a prominent professional dancer on ‘Dancing With The Stars’, has been suspended for one week from the popular ABC competition. The suspension stems from a controversial TikTok post that drew parallels to the 2022 Academy Awards incident involving actor Will Smith.
The TikTok content was created in response to a critique delivered by judge Carrie Ann Inaba to Chmerkovskiy’s wife, Jenna Johnson. Chmerkovskiy later issued an apology, explaining his motivation as an instinct to defend his spouse.
The TikTok Controversy and Suspension
The incident unfolded after a recent ‘Dancing With The Stars’ episode. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba offered critical feedback regarding Jenna Johnson’s performance. Val Chmerkovskiy then posted a TikTok video that quickly garnered attention.
The video reportedly referenced the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards in March 2022. Smith’s action followed a joke made by Rock about Jada Pinkett Smith. The comparison in Chmerkovskiy’s TikTok was interpreted by many as an implied threat or an endorsement of Smith’s controversial behavior.
ABC and the producers of ‘Dancing With The Stars’ swiftly responded to the online content. A one-week suspension for Val Chmerkovskiy was announced on October 17, 2026. This decision underscores the network’s stance on professional conduct and public image for its talent.
Chmerkovskiy’s Defense and Apology
Following the announcement of his suspension, Val Chmerkovskiy released a statement addressing the controversy. He acknowledged the inappropriate nature of the TikTok post.
Chmerkovskiy emphasized that his primary intention was to protect and defend his wife, Jenna Johnson. Johnson is also a professional dancer on ‘Dancing With The Stars’. The couple married in 2019 and frequently appear together on the show.
His apology aimed to clarify his emotional state at the time of posting. He expressed regret for any offense caused by the reference to the Will Smith incident. The dancer’s statement highlighted the pressures and emotional investment inherent in competitive reality television.
Impact on ‘Dancing With The Stars’
During Val Chmerkovskiy’s one-week suspension, his celebrity partner, Jenna Johnson, will continue in the competition. Professional dancer Alan Bersten will step in to dance with Dewan for the upcoming week’s performance. This temporary partnership aims to ensure continuity for Dewan in the contest.
The show has a history of addressing controversies involving its cast members. Such incidents often draw significant public discussion and media scrutiny. The swift action taken by the network reflects a desire to maintain the show’s family-friendly image and uphold standards of conduct for its participants.
The incident also brings renewed attention to the role of social media in celebrity culture. Public figures often face immediate consequences for online content, particularly when it touches upon sensitive or previously controversial events. The 2022 Will Smith Oscar slap remains a significant cultural touchstone, as detailed by Wikipedia’s extensive coverage of the event.
The Broader Conversation on Celebrity Conduct
This suspension reignites discussions about celebrity accountability and the boundaries of expression on social media platforms. Public figures, especially those associated with major television networks, are often held to strict codes of conduct. These codes extend beyond their on-screen performances.
The incident also highlights the emotional intensity of competitive environments like ‘Dancing With The Stars’. Dancers and their partners invest significant time and effort, leading to heightened emotions. These emotions can sometimes spill over into public forums.
The network’s decision serves as a reminder to all participants about the potential repercussions of their actions. It reinforces the idea that even off-screen activities can impact professional standing. The ‘Dancing With The Stars’ franchise, a global phenomenon, has consistently navigated such challenges, maintaining its popularity across many seasons and international adaptations, as reported by ABC’s official show page.
