Iran’s Global Reach: Tracking Dissidents Abroad with Threats and Intimidation

Iran‘s Apparatus of Fear Extends Beyond Borders

The Islamic Republic of Iran maintains an extensive security apparatus that targets anti-government protesters. This surveillance and intimidation extends beyond Iran’s physical borders. Iranians living in neighboring countries report systematic threats from the regime.

Dozens of individuals interviewed by Reuters in Turkey, Armenia, and Georgia described a consistent pattern of harassment. These tactics include the cancellation of passports, the freezing of bank accounts, and direct warnings of kidnapping and assassination. The goal is to silence dissent and prevent opposition activities, regardless of geographic location.

Unified State Control Over Dissent

Iran’s security apparatus, judiciary, and state broadcaster operate in concert to enforce this climate of fear. Domestically, the regime employs fast-track executions, closed-door proceedings, and mass prosecutions against perceived dissidents. These measures are designed to suppress internal opposition swiftly and decisively.

The Iranian judiciary, led by Gholamhossein Mohseni-Eje’i since July 1, 2021, has intensified financial penalties against individuals labeled as “traitors” or “collaborators.” This includes the seizure of properties and the freezing of bank accounts, effectively crippling opponents financially and socially.

Propaganda and Coercion: The Role of State Media

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) serves as a critical tool in the regime’s strategy. As the state-controlled media corporation, IRIB holds a monopoly on domestic radio and television services. It is utilized for propaganda and disinformation, shaping public perception and demonizing opponents.

IRIB collaborates closely with the Ministry of Intelligence (MOI) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This collaboration facilitates the production of news stories that align with the regime’s narrative and, in some cases, the coercion of confessions from political prisoners. These confessions are then broadcast to further the state’s agenda.

The IRGC and Basij: Internal and External Enforcement

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is central to defending the Iranian regime against both internal and external threats. Domestically, the IRGC employs secret police tactics to identify and neutralize opposition. Abroad, it has been accused of using terrorist tactics to target dissidents.

Within the IRGC, the Basij paramilitary organization plays a significant role in suppressing anti-regime activities. The Basij engages in street violence and intimidation to quell protests. It also conducts cyber surveillance, monitoring online activities of Iranians both inside and outside the country to identify and track potential threats to the regime.

Ongoing Protests and Human Rights Concerns

Protests against the Iranian government have been a persistent feature of the political landscape. Significant demonstrations occurred in late December 2025 and January 2026, fueled by economic collapse and widespread discontent. These protests highlight the ongoing struggle between the populace and the ruling establishment.

Human rights organizations have documented a severe crackdown on these protests. Since September 2022, hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries have been reported, underscoring the brutal methods employed by the Iranian authorities to maintain control. The international community continues to monitor these human rights abuses.

A Global Reach of Repression

The Iranian government’s efforts to suppress dissent are not confined to its borders. The systematic tracking and intimidation of anti-government protesters in countries like Turkey, Armenia, and Georgia demonstrate a sophisticated and far-reaching security apparatus. This global reach aims to instill fear and prevent any organized opposition from gaining traction, regardless of where its members reside.

Passports cancelled. Accounts frozen. Warnings issued. Kidnappings. Assassinations. Fear.
